I bought a birthday cake for a little boy whose mother was crying in the bakery – the following week, my sister called me shouting, "Do you know who that was?"

Like many parents, I often calculate my budget down to the last cent. Grocery shopping sometimes becomes a mental exercise: comparing prices, counting, anticipating.

That day, as I walked past the pastry section of the supermarket, I certainly didn't think I was about to experience a moment that would mark my life.

A scene that goes straight to the heart
Near the counter, a mother seemed to be hesitating. Next to her, a little boy was holding a pack of birthday candles with a large number six on them.

The woman timidly asked for a small chocolate cake. When the payment was refused, the awkwardness became immediately palpable. She tried a second time, visibly embarrassed.

The little boy looked up at her and murmured that it didn't matter.

But his gaze told a different story.
