An age-old hand gesture called Gyan Mudra is gaining new attention for its ability to bring peace to the mind and strength to the body. Practiced for thousands of years in yoga and meditation, it’s simple to do but offers deep benefits.
Gyan Mudra—also known as the “Mudra of Knowledge”—is one of the most widely used hand gestures in yoga and meditation. The word Gyan means knowledge in Sanskrit, and Mudra means symbolic hand gesture or seal.
You’ve probably seen it before: thumb and index finger touching to form a circle, with the other three fingers extended, palms facing upward. It’s often used during meditation to help focus the mind and channel energy.
This mudra appears in ancient Hindu, Buddhist, and yogic traditions. And now, it’s finding new life as a tool to fight stress in today’s fast-paced world.

You don’t need to be a yoga expert to try it. Just sit comfortably—on a chair or on the floor with your legs crossed. Keep your back straight and your body relaxed. Bring your thumb and index finger together on both hands, rest your hands on your knees or thighs, and keep your palms facing upward.
Experts say the best time to practice Gyan Mudra is early in the morning, between 4–6 AM, when your mind is calm and clear. Start with 10 to 12 minutes and gradually build up to 30 minutes as you get comfortable.
